What’s SAP?   SAP is capable of absorbing and retaining the liquid

Until the 1980s, the absorbent materials were cellulose or fibre-based products, including cotton paper, cotton, sponges and fluff. These materials’ water retention rate 20 times their own weight at most.

In the early of 1960s, United States Department of Agriculture conducts research on materials to improve soil water retention. They developed resins based on polymers grafted onto the backbone of starch molecules. Starch acrylonitrile copolymer hydrolyzed products can absorb more than 400 times the dead weight of water. This kind of macromolecule is called Superabsorbent polymers(SAP). SAP belongs to hydrogel, it can absorb the solution through hydrogen bonds with water molecules. So the water absorption capacity of SAP is affected by the ionic concentration of solution. After absorbing water, it will swell into a gel state, the absorbed water is trapped in the polymer. So it has the ability of absorbing water and also not so easy to release water.

SAP (Superabsorbent polymers) is a novel functional polymer material capable of absorbing and retaining a liquid of much greater mass relative to its own.

SAP is widely used. It can retain water when add to the soil. It can adjust and retain moisture when use for planting flowers, vegetables, seedlings. It can be used for suction surgery and trauma hemostasis when make into bandage, cotton ball, gauze, sponge. it can be used as the wrapping paper for fruits and vegetable retain freshness and moisture preservation. It can improve the properties of cement prefabricate when mixed with cement mortar.  

The biggest usage of SAP is in personal sanitary products. SAP can add paper pulp to make super absorbent paper, which can be used as woman’s sanitary napkins, children’s or adult’s diapers.
